Telephones In
Highwood
1894
On
Wednesday, the 3rd of October, 1894, The City Council of the Village of
Fort Sheridan (to be called "Highwood" in the future) granted exclusive
rights to a gentleman known as "George Cutter" to erect "poles and
wires" as necessary along the various streets and alleyways of the
Village, for the purpose of carrying "electricity" for the creation of
"telephone exchanges" within the Village Limits.
In exchange, Mr.
Cutter agreed to supply the telephonic services to the Village, for
official purposes, at no cost.
You would think
that somewhere there would be a statue or commemorative plaque dedicated
to this pioneer, Mr. Cutter, so we could take images of it with our
smart phones, and send the images around the world wirelessly.
Sadly, I don't
know of any such statue or commemorative plaque.
