Images of Highwood
1901

 

On February 2, 1901, the Federal government enacted what
were called “Anti-Canteen Laws,” which in effect made it unlawful
to sell or dispense alcohol on a military reservation.

 

As could be expected, within a year, three Chicago breweries moved
their operations to Highwood, and saloons sprang up to serve
the military men who were only too happy to spend their money
at them – especially around pay day.

 

Very few photographs exist, showing Highwood during
that time frame.
