This image,
taken at C.M. Gifford Studio,
926 Chestnut, Philadelphia, in 1865, shows four
generations of a single family, important in the
founding and development of Highwood, Illinois.
Perhaps you will recognize some
of their names.
They are: the baby, Stella
Wrenn (1864-1949),
sitting on the lap of her mother, Eliza Everts Wrenn (1841-1913),
in front of her step-mother, Margaret Keen Burtis (1817-1866),
who raised Eliza and her sister from infancy, after marrying their
father, following the death of his first wife, Maria Wychoff.
Seated next to Eliza is her grandmother, Phoebe Spicer Everts
(1788-1876).
Margaret Keen Burtis, born to
the Quaker family of John Burtis in Philadelphia,
became the matriarch of a growing family in Highwood and Highland Park,
following her marriage to Dr. W.W. Everts, the acknowledged
founder of Highwood.
Among her grandchildren was
Henrietta Mears, a
woman of some renown in her own right.
